Tidal Power Generation
A further addition to the Harbor Flood Barriers project could be a tidal power plant constructed between Long Island and Gallops Island.
Because of the size of the harbor basin a two-way generation plant could be constructed to take advantage of both the ebb tide and the flood tide.
As tidal barrier would need to be constructed between Long Island and Gallops Island as part of the Flood Barrier Project, to convert it to a tidal barrage would not be a substantial undertaking.
The tidal barrage would also be used to moderate tidal flow and currents at the flood gate opening.
The three main obstacles to a tidal power plant are (a) finding a suitable location, (b) the permitting of the site, and (c) the cost of the barrage.
Here we will have all three in place as part of the Harbor Flood Barriers project.
